ARFON

Photos by Dan Glover Page last updated: 2024-04-22

April 2013

Update required: "Long shot detail of all tx antennas" they said. Not sure why it has taken me two years to submit them, nor am I convinced this objective has been achieved

1000ft of virtual emptiness - unfortunately the base of the mast is hidden from this direction and almost everything of interest is at the top

No it doesn't lean really - but if I try to rotate it's "falling" in the other direction

The DSO antenna is an array of six tiers of panels, on three sides only of the usual pentagonal spine - see Alexander Heath's photos for more detail

There are six Siras at 283m, used by Classic FM...

...then two opposed pairs of crossed yagis at 259m for Capital FM, and two more Siras for Heart at 255m...

...then at 240m we have this rather elaborate arrangement for DAB, shared by all services

Not as sharp as I'd have liked - but no fewer than 16 5-element Band III yagis. Maybe there was a special offer?

Somewhat lower down is this lonely Sira - a reserve presumably

Otherwise there's nothing more by way of broadcast antennas until we reach the receive troughs visible in earlier pictures

From another direction it's possible to see more of the lower level, with the top of one of the site buildings just visible on the left

I can't now remember my position but it seems a reasonable guess the mountain is east of the site and therefore the two widely-spaced troughs on the left (one just at the top of frame) receive Llanddona - those on the right hand side seem to be aimed at Blaenplwyf
