DAB added - July 2015

BBC DAB entered service on 7-Nov-2011, South East Wales on 19-Jul-2016. The easy bit. As Ben Smith discovered in the earlier pictures, the FM radio aerial arrangements aren't so clear, but the horizontally polarised band II yagi on the tower is pointing in the correct direction for receiving St. Hilary. Due south. OFCOM quote a vertically polarised omni directional transmit aerial at 42m, which would place it 5m above the DAB aerial, which is at 37m, but there is no obvious aerial to be seen on the tower, around this height. The most likely candidate for the FM radio transmit aerial is the end fed dipole mounted on the side of the transmitter building, and the OFCOM quoted aerial height would therefore incorrect.

The 2 towers on Mynydd Aberdar, with the village of Heolgerrig below, and the Cyfarthfa Retail Park rooftops. The towers are about 500m apart. All the broadcast services are transmitted from the tower on the right. (The North westerly tower).

Right, DAB receive dish and band II receive aerial.

Two band III dipoles for DAB transmit.

Most likely candidate for the ILR transmit aerial, with a rather dirty SHF link aerial at the bottom of the pole.
