The UHF analogue TV relay aerials are mounted on the wooden pole. (What an odd arrangement - I wonder why?) It is a two section pole and has recently been replaced, as indicated by the decommissioned pole still lying on the ground at the site. The RBL aerials are not mounted on the pole, however, but are on the adjacent tower, as I have indicated. A pair log-periodics for BBC Television are directed towards Ridge Hill, while the single log-periodic for ITV/Ch4 is directed towards The Wrekin. When I visited the site in mid-November 2002, NGW (presumably) had just installed a vertical band II dipole, for the new relay of BBC R Shropshire serving Church Stretton. It was on preliminary trade test at the time and was due for official launch and regular programme service in late November / early December 2002. Unusually the frequency is 90.0 MHz VHF FM with a power of 10W. Even with this low power I have heard the tests as far away as Wolverhampton. A second low power relay transmitter is due on air for Clun on 104.1, and BBC R Shropshire inform me that they are looking at the practicalities of adding a third new relay for the Bishops Castle area, possibly at Oakley Mynd, depending on the coverage obtained from Clun once it is in service. Originally a BBC landlord site, TV channels 1 - 3 entered service in September 1979, with Channel 4 from August 1986. DSO was on 6th and 20th April 2011. |
