PYE GREEN (BADGER'S HILLS WOODS)

Photos by Alan Price Page last updated: 2016-04-15

April 2016 - Wolverhampton & Shropshire DAB

Just a stone's throw away from the BT tower at Pye Green are two ex-Home Office towers. It's hard to see from the photos, but the easterly tower, with the DAB antennas, is definitely taller than its counterpart

Cross-checking with old Ofcom data and Google Street View it seems the antennas are of the same type previously used for the West Midlands DAB multiplex which used the site (not the BT tower as we had previously believed) from July 2001 until August 2013. The West Midlands service, however, had maximum ERP on bearing 150 and with the antennas mounted on the south east corner of the tower - the new position reflects the different service area

Alan comments: "This had just been switched on a week or two before I took these photos, as reception at my location in Penkridge suddenly became much stronger" - however Ofcom data shows the site in use as of October 2015...perhaps initially the original antenna was used?

Alan notes there is good access as a bridleway passes past the site, indeed it seems the Google car took a run past during 2011!

Confirmation: this is Badgers Hill Woods!

General view: the right hand (eastern) tower has the DAB antennas...

...which are about 3/4 of the way up...

...on the south west corner of the structure...

...and Ofcom data puts the maximum ERP at 240 degrees. Alan commented: "Transmissions from this site are highly directional, my radio struggling to pick up a signal in Rugeley, about 4 miles away."

Further up a few low-band dipoles remain as a clue to the site's past use

There seems to be a single building between the two structures and an absence of stand-alone cabins. The DAB transmitter has presumably been accommodated within. The feed is most likely via SHF link(s)

Sutton Coldfield - on extreme zoom!

Hazy view of Birmingham about 20 miles away. The BT Tower can be seen towards the left

Turners Hill in the distance

Just a short way from the site, down the bridleway, this fine view of The Wrekin can be seen
