THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
PYE GREEN (BT)

Alan wrote: "On the same day I took photos of the nearby Badgers Hill Woods site, I ventured over to see if anything had changed at the BT Tower. A lot of the dishes seem to have been taken down, and the wire that was to the left of the tower in Rob's photos still remains. The transmissions for the BBC DAB multiplex fill a hole in coverage between Sutton Coldfield, Alsagers Bank and The Wrekin, and reception is now much stronger in the Stafford area. BBC DAB transmits at 1.75 kW ERP and Stoke & Stafford DAB transmits at 0.85 kW ERP" |
From the south: dishes on this side used to link to the BT Tower in Birmingham |
The tower now looks quite bare - the holes in the concrete "discs" were to allow waveguide to pass straight down from the horn antennas originally installed |
From the north: an overview of the broadcast antennas... |
...the slant polarised Band II log is on bearing 340 and the DAB yagis on 330 according to Ofcom data |
The legacy ILR receive antenna pointing towards Alsagers Bank. Signal 1 uses split advertising on its 3 FM frequencies so Pye Green is now line fed |
Look up... |
...look down...it's hard to see, but the wire that was in Rob's photos still remains... |
...and look around. The main building is to the south of the tower and this cluster of cabins is to the north. The presence of GPS cones is usually a hint to which ones are used for DAB but they are also used for time synchronisation by the mobile phone networks |
...this "well weathered" specimen could be for Stoke & Stafford DAB, which was added in May 2004 - there's a Crown Castle sign on the door - and it seems likely will also have accommodated the BBC DAB transmitter |
This sign may be an original from when the site was built in the mid-1960s |
Close by is a water tower also acting as a radio site - see the Badgers Hill Woods page for views of the "take off" from Pye Green |
