STAFFORD (COUNCIL OFFICES)

Photos by Rob Shufflebotham and Alan Price Page last updated: 2016-07-26

April 2009, updated June 2016

Rob: "Not much to say about this one really, arrived in Stafford, wandered through the rather lovely county town in the sunshine, and found the council offices on which this sits without a problem."

Alan: "This is the Radio Stoke relay for Stafford, which I believe was set up sometime in the mid 1990s. Nothing looks like it has changed since Rob's photos."

Editor's note: there was some debate following the publication of Alan's update - was the transmit antenna the dipole or the ground plane ("space invader")? In pursuit of a definitive answer we turned to the planning department, see below...

The two HP yagis receive. Rob thought it was the the strange 'space invader' for transmit...

...the folded dipole was considered as a possibility but isn't really of "broadcast" standard. The antenna behind is similar to the end-fed type favoured by Community Radio stations, just to add further confusion!

Definitely no Band II antenna here.

The answer is revealed below.

Editor's note: Rob maybe had the better weather/lighting but Alan's photos show no change to the antennas

...except the occasional presence of a bird!

The planning application from 1996 was for the two poles on the right hand (eastern) end of the building. At some point subsequently the UHF colinear (radio car receive) has been removed, the pole with the yagis shortened and the original end-fed transmit antenna replaced by the "space invader" ground plane.
