TURNERS HILL

As noted in "Tales from a Cold Field" (link below) the vision feed for Sutton Coldfield was via cable with the alternative of a 900 MHz link which had been provided by the GPO. The radio link ran from London Museum exchange (the Post Office Tower was later built next door) to the central Birmingham exchange (where a concrete tower was also built later). The intermediate sites were: Harrow Weald; Dunstable (Zouches Farm); Charwelton and Turners Hill which also seems to have been known as "Rowley Regis". Further information about the London <> Birmingham 900 MHz link has been added to the page for Zouches Farm It seems the link was not an unqualified success - initially it was meant to be reversible but it was later expanded to full two-way operation. Subsequent developments in the PO microwave network involved the construction of a new tower at Charwelton and it seems Turners Hill was not needed in the main SHF network. The site was, however, used for the pre-cellular mobile phone system on 160 MHz A local contact reports that the part-concrete ("Euromasts") tower at Turners Hill was constructed in the 1980s - prior to that there was only the steel tower (PO/BT) These images are Copyright BT Heritage, licensed under a Creative Commons License and reproduced under the following terms |
"CCIR Delegates at GPO Television Link, Rowley Regis" (1950) The tower on the left is the type used for the two-way link (the equipment was housed at the top) and it seems this was not yet in operation at the time of the visit. The antennas on the two guyed masts face central Birmingham and Charwelton and were used for the initial "reversible" link [TCB 473/P 4775] |
"CCIR Delegates Leaving GPO Television Link, Rowley Regis" [TCB 473/P 4772] Note: there is no longer a water tower at Turners Hill, however UK Trigpointing lists "Turners Hill Water Tower" at SO 96792 88721 (OS data 1954) - this is within the "Euromasts" site compound |
