THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

HOO ST. WERBURGH VHF

Photos by David Neale Page last updated: 2021-12-29

2005

There are no fewer than three transmitting sites on what the locals know as the Grain Peninsular at Hoo on the Medway estuary. There is also a ex-NGW AM site and an ex-NTL AM site.

This is the FM site which was initially used by Medway FM from 1 September 1997. Apparently the station received a fine of GBP 5000 for exceeding its licenced power [a link to relevant Ofcom documents will be added once located]. In 2000 the station was sold and then operated as "Medway's Mercury FM" before passing to GWR who sold the station to the Kent Messenger Group, leading to the new name KMFM from September 2002.

Over the years the allocations of 100.4 and 107.9 MHz have been switched between the Hoo and Gillingham sites, the most recent change was on 26 May 2016 with Hoo operating on 107.9 MHz and an increase in the licenced power at this site from 25 W to 300 W ERP per plane. The Gillingham site also received a power increase but from 100 W to 150 W.

Updated photos will follow, however there does not seem to be any obvious change to the transmit antenna.

Ofcom data shows maximum ERP on bearing 190, with a restriction of approximately 18 dB to the north in the vertical plane - presumably achieved through the effect of the phased dipoles and their spacing from their supporting pole. The horizontal pattern has deep nulls approximately east and west with some "leakage" to the north.
