THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

GREAT MASSINGHAM

Photos by Peter Bigwood Page last updated: 2024-02-29

August 2002

Radio Norfolk was the first service to be transmitted from Gt. Massingham, entering service on 12-Nov-1984 on 97.6 MHz. The Marconi transmit aerials were at 39m on the smaller tower. Transmissions were in mono as the RBL from Tacolneston was considered inadequate for stereo. The frequency was changed to 104.4 MHz, late in 1986.

Radio Norfolk transferred to new Alan Dick transmit aerials at 65m on the taller tower in October 1999. It wasn't until 28-Oct-2005 that Radio Norfolk's, Gt. Massingham transmitter was converted to stereo. By then the main Radio Norfolk Tx site had moved to Stoke Holy Cross.

ILR Kings Lynn (KLFM) launched on the 1st July 1992, on 97.6 MHz with aerials at 42.5m on the smaller tower.

Great Massingham in Norfolk - a very attractive village.

The Radio Norfolk (76.5m), tower is on the left (the southernmost), with KLFM (46m) on the right. Anyway, the antennas look right that way around.

The smaller ILR tower.

The taller BBC tower with two tiers of four sided Alan Dick & Co. band II circularly polarised panels.
