WOLVERHAMPTON (MANDER HOUSE)

Photos by Mike Smith Page last updated: 2018-10-16

Mander House, home to the ILR transmitter of 107.7 which launched as "The Wolf" on 7th October 1997. Their studios are on the top floor. Signal 107 launched on Monday 26th March 2012 as a result of the merger of three stations - The Wolf, The Severn (previously known in Telford as Telford FM) and The Wyre. The Mander Centre, immediately below this office block, is the main shopping centre in Wolverhampton. Mander House is the tallest building in Wolverhampton, and Wolverhampton itself is located on a good high spot with a good outlook in all directions - and ideal site for a local radio transmitter then!

The original aerial system consisted of two vertical folded dipoles mounted on a pole on the roof of Mander House in what would seem to be a co-linear arrangement. The power was a mere 100 watts

, but more recently 107.7 The Wolf had an enormous boost in power to, err, 180 watts with mixed polarisation. Mixed polarisation was achieved by tilting the upper-most dipole from vertical to a 45 degree position. The lower diople remains in a vertical position.

We are told by Andy Walters, who kindly contacted us, that GHR transmit only from the top slanted dipole in the photo above, the lower vertically polarised dipole is retained as a spare.
