NEWRY SOUTH

Photos by Jordy Lyons Page last updated: 2026-05-11

January 2006

Newry South was originally an IBA landlord site which entered service on 26-Feb-1982 to serve about 1250 people. Channel 4 was added on 31-Oct-1986.

The extension at the top of the tower, with what appears to be a flag wrapped around it, was an addition at the time of construction in 1981/2. Band II dipoles were fitted on this extension, which were intended to transmit BBC FM radio services, replacing the original Newry site. It seems that the plan then changed and the band II dipoles were eventually removed.

Cutting from BBC television and radio stations booklet, April 1984. Newry South isn't listed in the 1985 edition.
