ROTHERHAM

Photos by Bill Wright Page last updated: 2022-06-09

2007

These pictures are of the ILR Rotherham site at Boston Castle.

Bill started off, somewhat apologetically, by saying he wasn't sure if he should be sending in these pictures because he couldn't see the tx aerial! The reason, we feel sure, is that the aerial is concealed in a casing below the navigation light. There are unshrouded examples at Chilworth.

The Boston Castle site was used by BBC R Sheffield (95.05) until June 1973. ILR Sheffield & Rotherham (Radio Hallam) entered service on 95.9 MHz from 8-Feb-1975. This frequency was changed to 96.1 MHz on
30-Jan-1986, but was closed around 1996. The 96.1 MHz frequency returned to this site for Rother FM, which launched on 15-Oct-2006.

Bill also dimly remembers that there used to be four horizontal Band I aerials at 90 intervals at Boston Castle. "I don't know why. There's never been any telly from there I'm sure. Maybe they were Band II, but if so what were they for?"

There are still four impressive yagis, as you can see. These look towards Crosspool, and why they are so massive I can't imagine. If they were for RBL for Hallam or R Sheffield they wouldn't need to be so big. Crosspool isn't far away and it is line-of-sight. Odd, also, that they appear to be rather wideband. They are very nice aerials though, and I can believe that someone put them up just for the joy of it! Maybe someone might know the answers to some of these questions.
