THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

NOTTINGHAM

Photos by Neil White Page last updated: 2020-04-08

Photographs taken on 29 May 2018

This relay station first got me interested in the subject of Radio and TV transmission. For the first thirteen years of my life I lived within sight of this tower. I never understood why, in a line of 20 houses, only the two houses either side of ours had their aerials pointed towards it. The rest of the houses all pointed to Sutton Coldfield. Two years after we moved, the Midlands TV area was split into East and West. I wonder how many houses had their aerials quickly moved to this relay station.

It has taken me 50 years (nearly to the day) to actually visit the site. We always knew it by the name Kimberley Relay Station (the nearest town), but it is actually in an area called Swingate.

I was suitably impressed with the site. Since DSO, this is now a full transmitter rather than a relay station.
