THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
MIDANBURY (BROADWAY)

An mb21 correspondent alerted us that Unity 101 did not re-use the site vacated by SouthCity (The Saint) but a separate antenna located on the roof of an adjacent row of shops Both sites have the same name and NGR in Ofcom data, hence the previous assumption that Unity 101 took over the ex-SouthCity installation. So here is the transmitter named Midanbury Broadway.

The Broadway site is only a stone's throw away from the site named The Castle, and boasts a parade of shops featuring two more "convenience stores", assorted takeaways, a Post Office and a Band II vertical. Approximately vertical, anyway

The chimney stack is built conventionally - it's the antenna which isn't vertical. Normally mb21 contributors (and the editors) go to great lengths to ensure antenna support structures are upright, but it's really not an option here...

...it looks like the (single) lashing has slipped or cut into the mortar, allowing the stub mast to tilt? The weather was calm, so I don't know whether the installation is "stable"

It's quite possible the programme feed via the SHF panel will fail once the final piece of tape breaks and allows the weight of the feeder to pull directly on the connector - or maybe the whole lot will just fall down? Note the neat, horizontal, lashing with corner plates - that supports a redundant bracket on the opposite side!

It's now August 2015: remedial work has been done - yet the transmit antenna is still not quite vertical

It seems the chimney has been partially re-pointed, the bracket and lashing replaced and re-positioned and the length of the stub mast reduced Everything looks to be reasonably tidy (if perhaps a little under-engineered) but still a very slight tilt No apparent change to the "technical" arrangement

The old bracket had scored the brickwork on the corner of the chimney. The cables are now better supported

Meanwhile, at the other end of the SHF link, Unity 101's studio is not far from the centre of Southampton Mark Carver was at a meeting in a tall building opposite and noticed a non-standard antenna installation behind...

The crane provides a handy plumb-line showing the SHF link panel is installed in a conventional way The other antenna looks to be an end-fed dipole, perhaps used before Midanbury was available. Clearly the support structure has toppled but I wasn't able to see how it was meant to be attached

Another non-standard installation nearby!
