THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
LYDD
Photos by Peter Vrakking and Dan Glover | Page last updated: 2011-08-26 |
Peter: During my holiday in New Romney we went to visit Dungeness and we passed Lydd. I knew somewhere there was a medium wave antenna and I found it near some allotment gardens. Dan: Peter's photos led to a bit of discussion about the "electrical" arrangement of the antenna. I went in search of more detail. |

The shelter that contains the transmitters and the 2 satellite dishes to receive Absolute Radio and Talk Sport. Editor's note: Compared to mb21's previous pictures, one of the dishes has been moved. I think the wooden shed...is just a shed! |
We can now see that the top group of stays (there are six at this level) have an insulator part way along. The inner section is electrically bonded to the mast - forming a "capacity hat" and effectively increasing the length. The other stays don't seem to have much by way of insulators - but they may well be polypropylene. |
Peering through the inner fence, the antenna looks to be insulated from ground and base fed. The grey cable strapped to the mast powers the navigation light at the top - the site is very close to Lydd airport. |
