New UHF receive aerials

Visited during the long hot summer of 2018, Clettraval sits atop a large hill and can be seen for many miles around. Next door is the MoD early warning radar station, and site signage makes it very clear to keep a safe distance from it! This site is well worth a visit should you accidentally find yourself in the Outer Hebrides, you can drive virtually right to the site and the views are spectacular on a clear day.

The site itself

There are 3 towers at the site, one of which remains virtually unused. The right hand tower is the main broadcast tower.

Two tiers of Alan Dick & Co. vertically polarised band II panel aerials for FM radio transmit.

Two band III dipoles in front of an angled screen for DAB transmit.

These new UHF receive panel aerials were installed August 2017 just before the 700 MHz band clearance channel changes were implemented on the 20th September 2017 at the parent site, Scoval.

This 4 element band II yagi points towards Melvaig and receives the programme feeds for Radio's 1, 3, 4 & R.Scotland.

These two band II log periodics receive the programme feeds of Radio 2 and Radio Nan Gaidheal from Skriaig. Radio Nan Gaidheal from Melvaig is only 200 kHz away from Clettraval's Radio Nan Gaidheal Tx frequency. Hence the use of Skriaig. The reason why Radio 2 is taken from Skriaig rather than Melvaig is unknown, however the reason why there are two horizontally spaced aerials is to create a null in the HRP in the direction of the co-channel Radio 2 transmitter at Pontop Pike.

These satellite dishes are probably used to receive the DAB programme feed from Astra 4A at 4.8° east. GPS cone aerials on the building behind.

[Ed] I think that this satellite dish is looking at Astra 2 at 28° east. This may be to provide a reserve feed for FM radio.

Site Buildings

Around the back. Previous photos show the small pole on the right housing a microwave link of some sort, however this is now gone.

Please be aware the site is under Baaarmed guard (!)

Views from around the site are spectacular
