New UHF aerials - August 2022

For 700 MHz band clearance on 14-Nov-2018, Arfon has become two separate UHF TV transmitters named Arfon North and Arfon South. Two new antenna systems have been installed replacing the antenna which was installed for DSO in 2009. Arfon South transmit on the same channels used since DSO of 41/44/47 at 2 kW ERP, while a new transmitter Arfon North transmits on channels 29/31/37 at 8 kW ERP. All transmissions remain vertically polarised. Also one of the trough receive aerials has been replaced with a panel as a consequence of the B700 channel changes at Llanddona.

The DSO antenna which was on the cantilever extension at the top has been recovered and two new UHF antenna systems now reside just below the top stay level. The panels on the left are Arfon South. Those on the right are Arfon North.

The Arfon South antenna comprising 6 tiers of two panels. The panels are facing southeast and southwest.

The Arfon North antenna comprising 6 tiers of one panel. They are facing northwest. This picture was taken from a much greater distance from the mast, together with the position of the sun, hence the poor picture quality.

From this angle note how the panels on the second tier up are slightly forward of the others. This is usually done to provide some gap filling in the vertical radiation pattern.

The upper trough receive aerial has been replaced with a new panel aerial.

The two ILR transmit aerial systems. The four crossed 3 element Yagis transmit the 103.0 MHz service. The two Siras transmit the 107.2 MHz programme.

16 x 5 element band III Yagis transmit all the DAB services.
