History of services transmitted from Moorside Edge Moorside Edge was the second transmitter site opened as past of the BBC's regional scheme, replacing Manchester (2ZY), Sheffield (6FL), Liverpool (6LV), Leeds (2LS), Bradford (2LS), Hull (6KH) and Stoke (6ST). 17-May-1931 North Regional programme entered service on 626 kHz 12-Jul-1931 National Programme entered service on 995 kHz 27-Nov-1932 North regional frequency changed to 625 kHz 15-Jan-1934 Frequency changes. North Regional 668 kHz, National Programme 1013 kHz 17-Feb-1935 National Programme frequency changed to 1149 kHz 1-Sep-1939, 668 kHz re-assigined to Home Service. 1149 kHz closed During WWII, 2 x MWT 150 kW transmitters were installed for the 668 kHz service. Also an RCA 50 kW (BTA-50E) for the Light Programme. 29-Jul-1945 the BBC resumed peacetime operation with the new Light Programme on 1149 kHz and the North Home Service on 668 kHz 29-Sep-1946 Third Programme in service on 1474 kHz. Closed 18-Nov-1947 15-Mar-1950, Copenhagen 48 frequency changes implemented. North Home service changed to 692 kHz. Light Programme to 1214 kHz. 30-Sep-1967, 1214 kHz re-assigned to Radio 1. 692 kHz becomes Radio 4 1970 New aerial system brought into use 1973 Radio 4 power increased from 150 kW to 300 kW. 23-Nov-1978 GE75 frequency changes implemented. Radio 3 onto 1215 kHz, (was 1214 kHz); Radio 2 onto 909 kHz, Radio 1 onto 1089 kHz 27-Aug-1990, 909 kHz re-assigned to Radio 5 28-Feb-1992 Radio 3, 1215 kHz closed 30-Apr-1993 INR 2 (Virgin Radio) launches on 1215 kHz 30-Jun-1994 Radio 1, 1089 kHz closed 14-Feb-1995 INR 3 (Talk Radio) launches on 1089 kHz 20-Jan-2023 INR 2 (Absolute Radio), 1215 kHz closed |
