Detailed pictures of the former Nevis Radio transmit aerials - November 2022

Hearing from friends that it is possible to get to this site via a track, I set off one day parking at the houses in Achaphubuil and walked from there. It's a not too strenuous walk, and the views from the top over Fort William, Ben Nevis and the wider area are very good. I remember Nevis having good take off from here, only being interference limited up Loch Laggan by MFR's Cairn Gorm transmitter also on 96.6. Makes you wonder, when there's so much space on the dial why the Radio Authority stuck them close together...

Nevis moved transmissions from here to the aluminium smelter in April 2017.

The start of the access track

About 1/4 of the way up the track gets narrower and more rocky. Only Argocats allowed.

This was taken while approaching the site. That's Ben Nevis in the background.

The circular polarised SBS aerials Dave Stanley mentions are still on the tower, but the long vertically polarised folded dipole near the bottom appears to have been removed. I wonder if this was the Band I STL aerial now situated up at the aluminium smelter? Google Streeview from October 2015 shows the Band I antenna at Nevis vertically polarised and pointing towards Trislaig.

From the side

The portacabin is where I imagine Nevis Radio's Tx was. Just behind that is the hut for O2 and Vodafone. To the right is the EE/Three site (MBNL).

(We've had a message from Dave Stanley (who did the original installation) that the Nevis Radio tx was indeed just behind the door at the right hand end of the portacabin).

Foundations for what looks like an old tower

Cow Hill and Ben Nevis. You can see the path on Ben Nevis zig zagging centre right.

Looking up the Great Glen. Neptune's Staircase, Fort William (BBC FM site) and Loch Lochy all visible. The Fort Augustus site is on the convex shaped hill far left.
