BURGHEAD
Photos by Jack Richardson | Page last updated: 2023-11-23 |
A weekend away on the Moray coast saw me stop at Burghead. Photographing AM sites nowadays feels like photographing history, as in a couple of years the signals will probably be switched off for good. Conveniently a footpath/driveway runs to the right of the MW mast, allowing you to get close to the installation. I have seen the masts at night from a fair distance away, including from Brora beach and Tarbat Ness lighthouse. |
The three masts at Burghead. The one on the left is the Long Wave mast (152m), the short one in the middle the reserve (76m), and the one on the right the Medium Wave mast (152m). The tower in the middle for mobile phone. |
Starting off with the Long Wave mast. This is the most easterly mast on the site. There are nine wires attached to the top forming an umbrella configuration. These wires are 180m long with an insulator half way down. The lower section is parafil rope. |

I think these are for the aircraft warning lights? |
The 76m high reserve mast |
Hard to see from this photo but I think the building on the right is just a shell, possibly the old transmitter or generator building? |
Easier to see here |
A rather beat up 3 element yagi looking towards either Knock More or Meldrum, and a TV aerial looking towards Rosemarkie. |
