TOROSAY

Photos by John Rhodes Page last updated: 2024-04-01

1976

Torosay was originally called Craignure, but the landowner wanted it to be named Torosay, so it was said. It delivered 20kw erp in the direction of Fort William, receiving SHF from South Knapdale using height diversity. South Knapdale received Black Hill UHF.

Dark clouds gather over Torosay. Puffer carries on regardless.

Torosay building in 1976. The yagi transmitted telemetry back to the IBA control room at Black Hill using the 460mhz band.

The IBA LGT transmitter used a pair of Thompson CSF TH331 tetrodes in parallel giving a combined power of 1.75kw peak sync. The centre rack contained modulators with precorrectors, a switching unit and two 50S amplifiers, one for each 13db gain valve. A similar design of this centre rack was used by the IBA at Skriaig for its 1kw erp aerial.

Red Deer (spots in the distance to the left of the centre patch of snow)) would occasionally come to inspect proceedings. Rough approach road in foreground.
