LLANGOLLEN VHF

Photos by John Rhodes Page last updated: 2024-04-23

1983

Back in the 1970s and 1980s this site was known in IBA circles as Cyrn-y-Brain. It was used by the IBA as a site for the programme feed of ITV and S4C between Blaenplwyf and Moel-y-Parc. This eastern route to North Wales was constructed owing to the unsatisfactory reception of Blaenplwyf over the sea path to Arfon

The route of the IBA programme feeds from Blaenplwyf to Moel-y-Parc.

This poor quality 1983 photo shows the Llangollen site with its dishes which received Long Mountain and transmitted on to Moel-y-Parc. The dishes were mounted on a separate pole. The tower there today must have replaced the mast when the BBC re-engineered the site in 1985, leaving the dishes alone.

The four SHF equipments at Llangollen - two for ITV and two for S4C. The accommodation for the IBA was little more than the available space in a corridor. The dishes are presumably unused following DSO?
