THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

CWMAFAN

Photos by Martin Brown Page last updated: 2024-09-10

September 2024

As Ben Smith commented when he visited in 2010, the Cwmafan Tx is located just to the south of Pontrhydyfen, where street parking is to be had. Happily there is a public byway that runs right past it, although it's a narrow, steep, rocky track - and I wouldn't advise using it unless you have a very capable off-road vehicle! Sturdy footwear is also recommended as the loose stones and rocks are waiting to trip you and when I got to the site there were flying ants swarming.

Cwmafan must be one of the last sites to still use trough antennas to transmit UHF TV.

There are no changes to the broadcast aerials on the tower.

A few more mobile phone panels have appeared near to the top.

The transmit aerials. Two troughs for UHF TV and a single Marconi R8000 band II dipole for FM radio.

Flying ants

Foel Fynyddau is about a mile away to the west.
