| Pontop Pike is the main station which provides Newcastle and the County Durham area with television and network FM radio. Television and radio coverage in parts of Newcastle itself are supplemented by signals from the Fenham relay. Analogue Channel 5 and ILR are transmitted from Burnhope, which can be seen in the distance in the last of the photos from Christopher. Unlike at almost all other similar BBC stations, the opportunity was not taken to raise the height of the Band II aerials when conversion to mixed polarisation took place on 13th September 1989. The replacement crossbows were mounted in the same aperture as the old cylindrical slot system, at a mean height of 90m. The first four pictures come from Christopher Bell. |
