SOUTH KNAPDALE

Photos by Jack Richardson Page last updated: 2025-01-21

November 2024

A detailed look at this busy relay site in Argyll, 19 years after the previous photos.

I followed the track which begins from the A83, pulling in at a layby and walking up from Sloc nam Fearna. A pleasant up and down route. I noticed some cars parked about half way up the track, which saves a bit of time, though I guess it's down to you whether you wanted to risk it. I walked up on a Sunday, and I only passed 2 walkers. No forestry lorries or electricity workers (new overhead lines are being put in).

I am grateful to Callum George at Argyll FM for filling in some details.

Start of the track

Not too far left on the walk now...

From top to bottom - TV antennas, Gigha Island feed, Black Hill TV RBL, FM panels south face. Moving below on left, Argyll FM antennas, and on right DAB antennas.

TV antennas and the Gigha Island relay feed. Four horizontal UHF Yagis pointing south west. They were vertical in David's 2005 photos.

Close up of the TV antennas

Black Hill UHF RBL. 4 toed in log periodics.

FM panels north face

FM panels south face. Mean height 40m.

DAB Tx. Mean height 28m.

A crop, so the image quality isn't 100%, but these are the antennas for Argyll FM. I was a bit unsure when I was at site where the antennas were, but when I got the photos home and checked Ofcom params they became clear!

Callum writes: At the 107.7 site at South Knapdale, the vertical pair of dipoles at 27m is our TX antenna, at 270 degrees bearing.

Old UHF trough on Black Hill. I assume this is not in use anymore?

On the left are the FM recieve antennas for Radio 4 from Darvel. Black Hill R4 is on 95.8 MHz, South Knapdale is on 95.6 MHz, too close to RBL. Darvel R4 is 104.3 MHz.

The 2, vertical 6 element yagis are for Radio nan Gaidheal from Black Hill, and the horizontal log for the rest of the (higher powered) nationals.

About the same level of the other FM recieve antennas is this 4 element yagi pointing south west.

Callum writes: We have an Rx antenna at 15m which is a vertically polarised 4-element Yagi at 200 degrees bearing - however as you spotted this isn't currently in use as the link receiver is out of service and we've opted not to replace it (yet)!

We've been feeding that transmitter for over a year now via IP, and the amp there currently lacks an RDS encoder - the RDS is folded in at the 106.5 transmitter site at Baraskomil by Campbeltown, and was previously relayed along with the rest of our signal in a daisy-chain from there via Ballygroggan, which receives 106.5 and re-transmits on 107.1 as you deduced!

BBC DAB dishes

Unknown dish

Other tower at the site. Only a couple of antennas on it now.

Looking south east. Hunterston A Power Station centre left (the white dots).

Looking south west. Cara and Gigha Islands, Knocklayd and Rathlin Island in the background (Northern Ireland).
