PENICUIK

I had expected that the UHF transmit cylinder would have been replaced for 700 MHz band clearance, as the UHF transmit channels at Penicuik moved from upper to lower band V. However, as you will see, the cylinder is unchanged.

The Penicuik towers with the Forth of Firth and the Fife coastline in the distance.

The two towers at Penicuik. The left one only receives and transmits BBC FM radio. Everything else is transmitted from the other tower.

The unchanged UHF cylinder and the two band III DAB Yagis.

Ofcom information has these DAB aerials pointing due north towards Edinburgh.

Two band II FM radio transmit aerials. Ofcom data has both of the ILR services at the 40m level, however Dan Glover in 2014 reckoned that the upper crossed Yagis transmits 103.3 (Heart FM) and the lower slant Yagi transmits 102.2 (Forth 1).

Twin UHF receive troughs and a four element band II Yagi on the left and rather lost against the tower steelwork, all pointing towards Craigkelly. I'm surprised that the UHF troughs are not square to a tower face. The towers were usually oriented to be so. It is possible that Penicuik may have originally been planned as a Black Hill relay.

From this angle the 4 element band II receive Yagi is much more obvious.

The base of the UHF cylinder.

The BBC FM tower.

Simply a vertical band II dipole for transmit.

Band II receive. Left on Black Hill, right on Forfar for Radio 4 and Radio Nan Gaidheal.

The reason Penicuik can't RBL Black Hill or Craigkelly (R. Nan G) is due to the transmit frequency separation being only 300 kHz. Radio 4 transmits on 95.5. Radio 4 Black Hill is on 95.8. R. Nan G transmits on 104.4. Craigkelly is on 104.1 and Black Hill on 104.7. However Forfar has Radio 4 on 94.9 and R. Nan G on 103.7.
