New UHF transmit cylinder - March 2026

Came to Skye for a few days as never stopped on the island before. Thankfully, the weather was brilliant, the day I took these photos being the best.

Echo what Dave and Bill say about the track being a bit of a hike. Should've checked in my rucksack before leaving, as I got to the top of the hill and realised I'd left my zoom lens in the car.

The update list called for photos of the replacement UHF cylinder. This is at least the third UHF cylinder at Skriaig. The first was blown off during a storm on 23-Nov-1981.

From top to bottom - the UHF cylinder, the DAB antennas, and BBC FM radio.

I have no idea what the logs below the cylinder are for?

[Ed] Probably reserve transmit while the cylinder was being replaced.

The replacement UHF 8 λ cylinder. The previous cylinder was 16 λ tall.

DAB stack. The dipoles face towards Portree (north east), the ones behind south east.

BBC FM radio. Four tiers of Alan Dick & Co circularly polarised band II panels, facing north east (Portree), south east (Kyle of Lochalsh), south west and north west (Dunvegan/Isle of Harris).
