THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

LYDD

Photos by mb21 Page last updated: 2011-05-22

Lydd was built as a filler station to improve medium-wave reception of talkSPORT and Virgin Radio in the extreme south-east of England.

The mast is surprisingly compact, for a medium wave site, with a short, squat mast topped by a single navigation light due to the proximity of Lydd airport.

The site, on the damp flats of Romney Marsh, is just a mile or two from Dungeness.

History of services transmitted from Lydd

24-Apr-1995 INR2 (Virgin Radio) in service on 1260 kHz
27-Jul-1995 INR3 (Talk Radio) in service on 1107 kHz
20-Jan-2023 INR2 (Absolute Radio) 1260 kHz closed
