| Eitshal, on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides, is one of the UK's most remote and weather-beaten sites. Originally a BBC landlord site, UHF TV channels 1 - 3 entered service on 30th July 1976, with Channel 4 from August 1984. DTT was added in February 2000. DSO on 7th and 21st July 2010. BBC FM radio entered service in February 1990, with Radio's 1 & 4 from 11th May 1992. Isles FM launched in May 1998. The first two photos were taken by Gareth Randall: |
Below onwards: photos from Marcus Jones. Marcus says: Made a passing visit during a day spent on the Isle of Lewis. Sadly, I really didn't have the time to travel to the top of the hill but hopefully these pictures will be more up to date than the ones in the gallery at present. It really is a desolate place. The final shot is a view from the mast access road at the bottom of the hill. There is literally nothing for miles, and miles and miles. It's actually a very large island, which came as a bit of a suprise. I drove the length and bredth of Lewis that day, and I was really shocked at how isolated it really is. Amazingly, there was some sunshine (it was late August), but with the wind blowing, it was really cold. What it's like here in the winter I dread to think. |
