THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

GILLINGHAM

Photos by Derek Brice Page last updated: 2011-04-28

The first mast on this site was built in the early 1960s to receive TV signals for the old TV relay system which was run at first by Rentaset, who were later taken over by Radio Rentals.

In 1964 a second and higher mast was built. The mast you see in these pictures is the third and is no longer used for receiving TV because the old system was replaced by Telewest, who have their own direct feeds.

The vertical folded dipole at the top is used by Medway KMFM on 107.9. The cell phone aerials belong to T-Mobile. The other Medway KMFM aerial is Hoo FM, which broadcasts on 100.4

An interesting note is that the two masts originally had opposite frequencies and Hoo FM used to be the higher power of the two, until it was found to be causing interference to another station further north, so someone decided to switch 107.9 transmissions to the Gillingham mast.
