| Mike Smith writes:- We visited Fort William for a short four day break in May 2011. Sadly the weather was almost unremitting rain, wind and mist. Nevertheless I braved the elements to take a few shots of the Ballachulish site. Pleasingly we even enjoyed a few sunny intervals on our journey around Loch Leven. |

| It has been speculated that Ballachulish FM radio derives its feed from the Ardgour site on the western side of Loch Linnhe with Ardgour RBL Fort William. After visiting the area this does seem to be the case. The Ardgour site radiates horizontally polarised signals of 0.05 kW max e.r.p. directionally towards Ballachulish for each of the BBC Radio services. The technical parameters provided by Ofcom confirm the directional horizontally polarised signals from Ardgour towards the east. Ballachulish does indeed have its RBL antennas directed westwards in the direction of Ardgour. Also of note is that although there is an additional vertically polarised log periodic antenna present on the Ardgour tower facing west (i.e. the opposite direction to the horizontally polarised log), the technical parameters indicate that there is no vertical component transmitted. Is that antenna presently unused for transmission or are Ofcom's technical parameters incorrect? A minor mystery! |
