SOMERSHAM

Photos by James Furness Page last updated: 2023-07-30

February 2008

Here's the Somersham UHF TV relay in deepest, darkest Suffolk. The site is actually right at the end of a row of houses so I had to respect the residents' privacy, but I still managed to get some worthwhile shots.

The village of Somersham is in a quite pronounced valley (for East Anglia!) and I would think that decent UHF TV reception from any of the main transmitters in the area is pretty much impossible, hence the relay.

The tx is located on higher ground to the north of the village where it's possible to receive good signals from Sudbury, which it does using a single horizontal log. Another single vertical log is used to illuminate the target area. Virtually every domestic tv aerial in the village is directed towards the relay.

Somersham was originally an IBA landlord site which entered service during the spring of 1992.
