THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

BINCOMBE HILL

Photos by Michael Curtis, Mike Smith and John Staniforth Page last updated: 2024-10-15

The Bincombe Hill transmitter is situated on the Ridgeway between Weymouth and Dorchester.

Mike Smith describes Bincombe Hill as a nice tidy modern site, with T-Mobile phone equipment installed.

It also is home to a low power tv relay for parts of Weymouth, and local radio for Dorchester, Weymouth and the surrounding area.

The four vertical UHF log periodics for the TV relay can be seen about a quarter of the way up the mast almost adjacent to the other four 'toed-in' logs receiving the RBL feed.

The aerials for the tv relay can be seen most clearly in the photo above.

Parts of the north of Weymouth are shielded from the Weymouth transmitter at Wyke Regis by intervening hills. These areas were poorly served until the opening of Bincombe Hill in 1994.

The TV transmitter is directional, and only broadcasts southwards towards Weymouth. Due to the very low power of transmission, only the Littlemoor area of eastern Weymouth is served by this TV transmitter.

The twin Sira aerials on the right are for Wessex FM.
