ALEXANDRA PALACE

Alexandra Palace or more usually Ally Pally is the most historic broadcast site in the coutry, so when stuck at Kings Cross station with a couple of hours to kill, what better to do than a quick trip up the line and a short (steep!) walk to the palace. What a view there is when you get there too, the tower is fantastic. Oh, Scenery? Yes, quite nice too. Photos at the end. For now, onto the main structure. |
Who'd like a high res composite of the whole tower? Well it just so happens I have one! Right at the top we have the main (National?) DAB array. Below that is at least one FM antenna for the FM services. Further below is the 8 panel TV array. Looking further down the tower what appears to be several smaller DAB arrays can be seen. (Editor's note: AP was at one time home to some Band III mobile radio networks, Ofcom data shows DAB as being only the top array.) |
On the south side of the mast you can just make out the Rx antenna on Crystal Palace. |
Here's that FM array again. (Editor's note - I believe the broadcast antenna is just the slanted dipole?) |
Another angle on the TV Rx Log. |
Onto some shots of the building now, the tower sitting under forboding skies. There was building work going on when I visited hence the wood covering areas of the building. |
Views from the site over London are stunning. |

Using my old Panasonic DMC-FZ18's 504mm lens (The rest of the set was shot on my new Nikon D90!) I managed to grab some updates for other sites from Ally Pally, making this a multi site hit. First off, Crystal Palace. From this shot you can clearly see the new DTT array is in place(!). |
Croydon here, no changes I can see. |
Finally the BT tower, looks like they haven't changed anything here either. Pair of DAB antennas still as they were ! To the right is Euston Tower, home of Capital Radio 1973 to 1997. |
