THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
CROYDON
Photos by Van der Graaf, Wireless World, ITA Yearbook, an EBU Monograph and Mark Carver | Page last updated: 2024-06-11 |
Croydon was the site chosen by the ITA to transmit the London ITV service which launched on 22-Sep-1955 on VHF ch9. Initially a 61m (200ft) tower with an omni directional band III aerial transmitted the service with an ERP of 60 kW. The ERP was increased to 120 kW from 8-Sep-1956. The permanent 152m (500ft) tower was constructed during 1962 on the site of a former tennis court. It took over the London ITV transmissions on 5-Dec-1962. |
This picture was taken around 1958 and shows the original tower, omni-directional Band III aerial and temporary pre-fab building. |

This, and subsequent pictures show the present tower being constructed alongside, in 1962. |
London ITV transmissions on ch9 transferred to the new tower on 5-Dec-1962. It wasn't the end of the road for the old tower though. After it had been dismantled it was shipped to the Isle of Man where it became the supporting structure at Richmond Hill for the Band III ITV transmission. An ITV Handbook of the time states that it was strengthened whilst being rebuilt in order to carry UHF aerials in the future; Richmond Hill was apparently scheduled as a UHF site but of course was in the end never used for colour TV. |

Above & below: from an early 1960s EBU monograph, a mast outline and a detailed photo of the transmitting arrays. |
This final picture (taken in 1985) from Mark Carver shows the Band III aerials still in place. At that time the transmissions on 95.8 & 97.3 MHz came from aerials mounted on the cantilever, eventually the FM transmissions were relocated to the former Band III aperture and the radio cantilever was replaced with UHF aerials. |
