| Located just off the M20 in Kent, Wrotham is the main BBC FM National Radio transmitter for the south-east of England. The site was purpose-built for radio in 1955 and has never broadcast any television services, as these came from Crystal Palace and now also Bluebell Hill. Wrotham was also home to a (BBC/NGW) maintenance team which takes care of both tv and radio transmitters across the South-East. (is this still the case?) In addition to the five national FM services Wrotham also transmits the BBC local station for Kent. At one time it also broadcast BBC Radio London on 95.3 MHz. In a reshuffle of frequencies in preparation for the introduction of ILR in 1973, Radio London's frequency changed to 94.9. The station transferred to Crystal Palace in October 1981. |
