THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY
HAMMERSMITH
Photos by Mark Carver and Robert Whittaker | Page last updated: 2022-02-28 |
This West London relay is located on top of the former Citibank building, next door to the Lyric Theatre. The transmit aerial is 4 bow-tie dipoles. The RBL antenna is not obvious from ground level... The relay was built to serve about 6,700 people in areas around Hammersmith Broadway, Brook Green, an area south of the Hammersmith Flyover as far as Fulham Hospital and westwards as far as Ravenscourt Park, previously served by a wired cable system. It entered service on 6-Dec-1985. |
By the time of Robert's visit, Citibank had vacated the building, which is now known as One Hammersmith Grove. Their corporate sign has now been removed. |
The TX bowties are facing west, with a log periodic RX on Crystal Palace to the south east of the site. |
Looking south east from the site towards central Hammersmith |
Looking south east, Croydon transmitter visible. Crystal Palace is just to the left, behind the plastic shrouded building |
Looking south towards the Thames and Fulham |
Looking north west towards Wembley Stadium |
Looking east. The tube lines run adjacent to the north side of the transmitter building. Here they can be seen disappearing into the tunnel on the approach to Hammersmith station, with the TX just right of frame. The abandoned viaduct used to connect Ravenscourt Park station to the now closed Grove Road station. |
Looking west. The middle two lines are the Picadilly line, which heads out towards Heathrow. The outer lines are the District line heading towards Ealing Broadway and Richmond. The station is Ravenscourt Park. |
