KINGS LYNN

July 2008

Kings Lynn is one of three relay stations in Northwest Norfolk which transmitted only BBC1 and ITV analogue television. The other two were Burnham and Wells-next-the-Sea. All three were built to provide BBC 1 East and ITV Anglia to an area which was served by Yorkshire regional programming from the Belmont transmitter. Built by the IBA, Kings Lynn entered service in December 1981 as a relay of Sandy Heath with site number 124.03 transmitting on UHF channels 48 & 52.

ITV Anglia split their regional news service into separate east and west programmes in 1990. Soon afterwards ITV at Kings Lynn was re-attributed to Tacolneston. Similarly, the BBC also did an east-west split in 1997, at which point BBC1 at Kings Lynn was also re-attributed to Tacolneston. During 1998 BBC1 was moved from ch48 to ch39 as ch48 was to be used for interim DTT multiplex 2 at Belmont.

As with Burnham and Wells-next-the-Sea, Kings Lynn became a standard three-multiplex relay at DSO.

The site is located in the royal estate at Sandringham and is well hidden in the trees, hence the lack of photos.
