Roger: "This is a difficult site to photograph as it's in a heavily wooded area. A long shot from a public footpath would have been possible if the weather had been better, but between setting out and reaching the site it had changed from sun to cloud and mist"

Dan: Harrow Weald was one of the sites used for the 1949 GPO London to Birmingham 900 MHz Television Link. Archive photos of the the similar installation at Dunstable have been added to the Zouches Farm page. Harrow Weald, along with most of the other sites, was subsequently used for PO/BT SHF links which carried television distribution along with telephony from the late 1960s. The current tower is likely to have been installed around 1965 - at that time using horn antennas operating simultaneously on 4 GHz and 6 GHz

The BT link site was an intermediate point between the London Tower and a similar station at Dunstable (Zouches Farm) One pair of the 4/6 GHz horns was still in place at the time of Roger's visit, together with the large dishes used by later generations of the BT network

Roger: "Like Mike Smith at Esher TE I had difficulty identifying the DAB transmit aerial.

Now I've printed off the pics and got the ruler out the folded dipole looks too big for band III; I suspect it's high band. I'm drawn to what looks like a chunky end fed aerial..."

Dan: Ofcom data shows omnidirectional coverage from an antenna at 45 m, with 300 W ERP for Digital One and just 3 W ERP for the local London multiplex. Other BT sites in and around London (including Esher TE) use a similar style of antenna and similar power levels
