Comments: Former BBC 1 VHF TV site

Hide historic services

The first three photos of the 405-line VHF tv relay for Bude in NW Cornwall were taken in 1966. The site went into service on 28-Nov-1966 and closed on 4-Jan-1982.

The BBC Equipment Department mobile workshop seen here was used at that time on many of the remote sites. Although Bude was a relay of North Hessary Tor, on this occasion the team were installing a temporary channel 1 aerial for the reception of Redruth.

The site closed on 4th January 1982 and later the tower was dismantled.

The grid reference for the site - SS233069 - leads you to Pollards Way in Stratton and the only evidence that there had once been a transmitter site here is a small concrete building with a vent in the side.
