Today on a visit to our local LCP car accessory store at the top of Canterbury Street in Gillingham, Kent, I took some pictures of an old out-building that used to house a WWII, Group H, MW station that the BBC used. That aerial would have been strung to the Jezreels tower, long since demolished (in 1961) but, amazingly we do have a photo of the tower...! |
This was also the site that was used for the medium wave service of BBC Radio Medway from 1972 before being transferred to a new site at Hoo in 1976. |
Note the broken stub of the insulator where the feeder would be attached. During my previous visit some ten years ago, the insulator was still intact. |
Our final photo, taken by David Johnson around 1970 (and contributed by Arthur) shows the Band II aerial used to receive the Radio Medway service from Wrotham (on 97.0 MHz) and the AM feeder cage. |
The BBC coverage area map of the time the site was obliquely referred to as "in Gillingham". |
BBC Engineering Information Department published these two coverage maps in June 1973. The 21st June 1973 happens to be when Radio Medway changed FM frequency from 97.0 to 96.7 MHz. |
