Show historic services

This site has a very favorable location on a hill to the north-east of the town which is locally known as 'Barlick'. As such, despite its low power Barnoldswick provides good BBC network FM coverage to a wide area of the Craven area of North Yorkshire and parts of East Lancashire.

The first two pictures show the quite well populated mast, the third shows a north-facing view over the rolling hills to the Skipton TV transmitter whose distinctive white top can be seen above the trees. Skipton provides the TV service of choice in much of this area as Winter Hill sits behind a large hill and is totally blocked. The fourth picture shows the top of the mast which features aerials for the new police airwave service (I think) and the unusual (for broadcast) end-fed VHF dipole for the FM services right at the top. The sixth picture shows the FM receiving aerial which points roughly south towards Holme Moss. Finally, the seventh picture shows the foot of the mast and the transmitter housings which on the day of my visit were whistling loudly as a bracing northern gale swept between them!

Barnoldswick entered service on 7th April 1993.
