These are pictures of the Varteg Hill VHF relay. This serves the town of Ystradgynlais and the villages of Crynant, Seven Sisters, Cwmllynfell and Ystalyfera. The VHF signals can be received well into the Brecon Beacons, presumably due to the site's altitude.

Varteg Hill receives its feed from Carmel, which in turn receives its feed from Wenvoe. Growing up in Crynant I vividly remember Varteg Hill being one of the last sites to have Radio 1 added (28-Aug-1993), putting an end to years of listening via weak and crackly signals from Wenvoe (and later Kilvey Hill which started Radio 1 broadcasts on 18-Dec-1992)!

The site originally entered service on 24th December 1982. Radio Wales was added in 2002.

The Ystalyfera relay is very close by!
