The NGR published elsewhere for the Letchworth site places it at the Rosehill Hospital on the A505 Cambridge Road between Hitchin and Letchworth. In fact it's at the Garden Centre just across the road. As you can see from Vincent's first photo there are great views down to Hitchin, below.

This otherwise modest site appears to be a little unusual and this, combined with the slightly inaccurate NGR made us wonder if this actually was the Tx site, but research has shown that it is.

The Tx aerials are two half-wave spaced dipoles producing a figure-of-eight radiation pattern which covers Hitchin and most of Letchworth and provides a reduction towards the stations 106.9MHz transmitter at Cole Green.

There are no Rx aerials at the site as it is line fed from the studios in Old Knebworth

These two tall conifers caught my eye - they were located probably less than 50m from the FM mast. They are in fact phone masts that have been made into the form of an artificial fir tree!!

I can confirm that at the time, a bird was singing happily away from the top of the "tree", (instead of being cooked alive, for you cynics!!).
