OKEHAMPTON

Photos by Martin Watkins Page last updated: 2021-10-11

January 2003

The original 1964 Okehampton VHF band 1 & 2 wooden pole site, was about 2.8 km south-west of the current Okehampton site. Link to BBC RD reports at foot of this page. Services were transferred on 12th September 1966. The current 45m tower dates back to the UHF TV installation, which went into service on 3 channels on 25th November 1977. Channel 4 was added in May 1984.

On 22nd September 1983, Radio Devon went into service, and the BBC FM radio nationals were changed to mixed polarisation. Radio 1 was added late in 1994.

Martin Watkins visited the Okehampton site on a cold and heavily overcast January day but managed this comprehensive set of photos from this Devon site.

Okehampton is a tv relay of Caradon Hill and an FM radio relay of North Hessary Tor.
