Comments: Originally a BBC owned VHF 405 line TV site which operated on Band I channel 2; this service was closed in 1982.

Show historic services

Penwaun was built by the BBC for 405-line BBC1 (Wales). The BBC site name was Cardigan and entered service on 6th February 1967, and closed on 5th July 1982. There is a link to the BBC summary of installation report at the foot of this page. As can be seen from this report, there was provision for a UHF transmitting aerial at the top of the tower. However, with the Penwaun/Cardigan site about 2 miles southwest of the town of Cardigan, a closer site was eventually chosen for a UHF TV relay at St. Dogmaels.

Penwaun is the site chosen by Radio Ceredigion for a 400W relay to Cardigan and the surrounding area. The polarization is mixed, well slant it seems. First general shot shows the VHF receive aerial about a third of the way up on the left. The second shot shows shows the transmit aerial, while the final shot shows close up of the RBL receive aerial.

The three element band II Yagi on the left is the receive RBL aerial pointing towards Blaenplwyf.
