THE TRANSMISSION GALLERY

TAUNTON VHF

Photos by Martin Watkins Page last updated: 2012-03-08

March 2012

Taunton VHF is readily seen from the M5 just south of J25, and during winter 2011/12 a new mast appeared near the old one, along with new Band II aerials. So recently a detour was made to see what was going on.

Seen from the northbound carriageway, the old mast is on the left.

Creeping round the back we see the two slant dipoles on the old mast.

This is the new tower, with a two element slanted Yagi pointing at Taunton and a three element horizontal Yagi pointing (apparently) at Mendip. So does 96.5 MHz now simply relay 102.6 MHz or is the three element perhaps for monitoring? Or could it even be transmitting, it's quite sturdy.

(It's subsequently been confirmed by someone (who really does know!) that this site is now an off air relay of Mendip's 102.6 MHz).

The monitoring set-up on the roof of the former studio building.
