Worlebury Hill is the VHF transmitter for The Breeze (North Somerset) serving the Weston-super-Mare area. The site first entered service on 20 September 1999 as WFM, later becoming Star 107.7 and Star Radio (now "The Breeze", originally WFM).

In August 2007 the Bristol ILR station, then operating as GWR, added a transmitter for the local area - this apparently carried the Bristol programme but with split jingles and local advertising. 103.0 MHz now carries Heart.

Robert reports: "There are two masts at this site, which also includes a water tower and appears to be owned by the local water company.

The whole area is surrounded by an enormous stone wall surmounted by razor wire and is in the middle of a densely packed wood on top of Worlebury Hill itself. This therefore makes the taking of photographs rather difficult."

It is not at all obvious which mast carries the transmitting antenna for The Breeze. Both towers carry several of what appear to be vertical Band II dipoles, but the most likely candidate seems to be on the left hand tower about a third of the way down from the top. This is the one pointing directly south towards the town and is a vertical folded dipole. Perhaps someone in the know can confirm which antenna is the correct one?

The antenna for Heart is more obvious since the station uses mixed (slant) polarisation from a yagi.

Editor's note: Ofcom data shows The Breeze with vertical polarisation from an antenna at 30 m. Maximum ERP is on bearing 160 with reductions of up to 28 dB towards north. (The licence requires only a 3 dB reduction between north west and north.) The radiation pattern is probably consistent with a dipole mounted on the side of a tower.

The next two photos are from Peter Barrington. The first shows the slant polarised aerial for ILR on 103.0 MHz...

The second shows aerials at Star FM's studios which link to Worlebury Hill.
"Those in the know will be able to explain the two aerials" he says.
