Mike: "Leatherhead Stoke D'Abernon is quite easy to spot from a distance, but being as it is on some private land it is difficult to photograph close up. I managed to find two locations on a nearby road that gave a reasonable view and a good impression of the site and the tower. It was not possible to get a close up of the DAB aerial system however, though it seems to be a typical stacked pair of dipoles..." Dan: "The access track, although private, also serves the Shetland Pony Club next to the site. A suitably timed visit allowed detailed photos of the DAB antenna". |
Curiously none of the site labels had been completed and there is little clue as to the ownwership. Planning documents suggest the site may have been managed by Surrey County Council at one point. |
As identified by Mike, the DAB array comprises two dipoles. These are mounted on a stub mast clear of the main structure - presumably to tailor coverage and reduce the "shadow" effect of the tower. The small tower to the right is the Epsom aeronautical beacon on 316kHz. This uses a "capacity hat" to improve the efficiency of the short structure. |
