Show historic services

Originally commissioned to extend Classic Gold's Reading service to Basingstoke and Andover in December 1996, Smooth Radio on 1485 kHz closed at Washwater on 15th May 2015. The site is expected to be decommissioned in the future. Apparently the owner of the Manor Farm site terminated its lease prompting its closure, which meant under Ofcom rules Washwater had to close too.

The appropriately named Washwater - located at a waterworks SW of Newbury on the edge of Great Pen Wood.

There are two other broadcast sites in Newbury, Wash Common Water Tower for ILR and Newbury VHF for network radio.

You can see that the top guys are electrically connected to the top of the mast with isolators about a quarter of the way down to form a capacitance "top hat". This increases the capacitance with the ground and makes the aerial perform as if it were taller.
